The first day of fall has arrived and some telltale signs of changing seasons are starting to make us realize summer is ebbing away. Even unprecedented heat the past couple of days cannot stay the inevitable change from summer to fall. Leaves are starting to change colors, geese are starting to flock upward, and the days are starting to get shorter.

We also have been able to see some monumental change in environments: politically, socially, economically, geopolitically, and religiously. All around us, there are whirlwinds smashing up against the shores of our lives trying to move us, trying to unsettle us.

One such baby tornado was the prediction the world was supposed to end on Saturday, the 23rd of September. Part of their argument was quoting from the Bible coupled with a supposed planet x which was going to hit us along with a rare alignment of the stars. If you haven’t noticed yet, they were wrong.

If one is going to quote the Bible, one needs to take the text in the context in which it was given and in light of the context of the whole Bible. The Scriptures do not contradict themselves. Yes, the Bible does warn us near the end there will wars rumors of wars, earthquakes, famines, pestilence and the like, but it also says this:

Matthew 24: 36 “But of that day and hour knoweth no man, no, not the angels of heaven, but my Father only. 37 But as the days of Noah were, so shall also the coming of the Son of man be. 38 For as in the days that were before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noe entered into the ark, 39 And knew not until the flood came, and took them all away; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be. 40 Then shall two be in the field; the one shall be taken, and the other left. 41 Two women shall be grinding at the mill; the one shall be taken, and the other left. 42 Watch therefore: for ye know not what hour your Lord doth come. 43 But know this, that if the goodman of the house had known in what watch the thief would come, he would have watched, and would not have suffered his house to be broken up. 44 Therefore be ye also ready: for in such an hour as ye think not the Son of man cometh.”

When the Lord comes, it will be like a thief in the night. Therefore, it behooves us to watch, wait and be ready. You could be interrupted in the reading of this letter at His coming or it could be hundreds of years hence. We do not know, but we can know what the Lord says about it. If those who claim Christ would only study their Bibles they would avoid so much foolishness and unnecessary worry in life. Truth always dispels error as light dispels darkness.

God has given us His Maglite to help us navigate through the darkness of this world. May God help us to pick it up and read it so as to be able to see. Have you flipped your Bible switch to “on” today?

(Psalm 119:105) “Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.”

May God’s light keep us from stubbing our soul today!

Because of His Light,

Pastor John Schofield
